If – by Rudyard Kipling – Poem Reflection

A common topic in most poems is strength, power, and persistence. These are the inspirational poems and the poems usually last if a good author has written it. However, today, I will talk about an author named Rudyard Kipling. He has created a poem named, “If.” It is one of the most interesting poems I’ve ever read.

Why his poem is so interesting? Rudyard Kipling is an English poet, journalist, short-story writer, and novelist who is actually born in India. If someone had ever heard of him, they would definitely find out through researching the famous movie and book, “The Jungle Book.” He was indeed the author of this great movie we all know today. What interests me about one of Kipling’s most notable poems, “If,” is how he uses his own mind to describe what he thinks are the best possible characteristics instead of just writing about inspiration, power, and persistence. He has blended his great use of words and his mind into what he thinks is the best possible man and “If” is his creation through that.

What I mentioned previously, is the general idea of the story. Kipling is writing about the key characteristics of a man or his child possibly. Some of the characteristics include persistence, to be neither timid nor egotistical, to hold onto something that is out of reach until it falls away from you, and to use characteristics about you to your advantage to aid you in doing things in life. What I find interesting also is that these characteristics still apply today. These are still the best characteristics in modern day humans, yet this poem was written in 1895. Clearly he was a knowledgeable man who has created a one of a kind poem that will really last in society.

In conclusion, Rudyard Kipling has actually made an extremely big impact on our society if you look at it. He put together the “The Jungle Book,” one of the most famous movies to date which influenced fantasy in nature. His poem “If,” is extremely accurate as well and I have no doubt that he put a lot of thoughts into the poem when he wrote it. If that’s not a great author, I don’t know what is.
